Why clean the mattress??

No matter how clean the home, all mattresses are prone to the same problem. When we sleep, we produce up to half a litre of sweat every night & shed about a gram of skin each day and although we wear night clothes, which we wash regularly, together with our bed linen, this is no protection against what happens to the mattress.
Very quickly the mattress will become host to a multitude of horrors, from bacteria to fungal spores and microscopic house dust mites which feed off dead flakes of skin. Is it any wonder that without cleaning a mattress, it could be the dirtiest item in your home? It is estimated that there are up to 2 million house dust mites living in a mattress and in an average pillow, 10% of its weight is made up of dead skin and dust mites.
House dust mites find a mattress the perfect breeding ground. With warmth and moisture and no natural enemies, they will establish in a mattress within several months and it is their droppings which cause most problems. These have been medically proven to trigger a whole host of allergic reactions, from Asthma, Eczema and Bronchitis, to Itchy Eyes and Sneezing.
Even protective bedding sheets may be largely ineffective in reducing problems like asthma, when they are the only measure taken to combat an allergy.

Carpet cleaning secrets

Sometimes no matter how clean we try to keep the carpet  your carpet will eventually become the victim of drops, spills, accidents and whatever is on the bottom of your shoes.

Blot Stains, Don’t Rub Them

Dab stains with a cleaning solution and a clean cloth, paper towels, or a sponge. The key is blotting. Blotting puts a small amount of pressure on the stain to soak it up,. “Rubbing causes the particles to get ground into the carpet fibers, and this can lead to the premature breakdown of those fibers.” Always blot from the outside of the stain inward, as blotting outward can spread the stain.

The Club Soda Process You may have heard that club soda is effective against beer and wine stains. It’s true—if you use it correctly.Blot the area with the soda on a cloth. If that doesn’t work, mix one part white vinegar with one part water and pour it into a handheld sprayer. Spray the solution on the entire stained area and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to soak in. Then press a clean sponge onto the area to soak up the solution and the stain. You may have to repeat this process to eradicate the stain.Once the stain is gone, rinse the spot with warm water. Use your hand to brush the carpet strands into their natural direction. Finally, lay white paper towels over the area and weigh them down with something heavy, like a phone book. The towels will absorb the dampness from the carpet. Leave the towels in place until the carpet is dry, usually about one day.

Try Shaving Cream - the best carpet cleaner for general stains is ordinary shaving cream—”It will remove just about every type of stain.” Apply the shaving cream directly to the stain and let it set for about 30 minutes. Once the shaving cream has set, blot it away with a dry white cloth. Finish by spraying the area with one part vinegar mixed with one part water and then wiping away the solution with a cloth.

Freeze-Dried Gum You step in chewing gum out on the street but don’t realize it until you tracked that gross, sticky mess onto your carpet. To get it out, head to the freezer and grab a couple of ice cubes. Freeze the gum with ice cubes for about 30 seconds. Once the gum is frozen solid, use a spoon to lift up the glob and cut the strands of carpet as close to the gum as possible. If you cut only a small amount of carpet, the spot shouldn’t be noticeable.

Dishwasher Detergent vs GreaseThe best method against difficult-to-clean grease stains is to use a drop or two of a grease-cutting dishwashing detergent, such as Joy, in a cup of water. It’ll cut through the grease in the carpet just the way it does on your dishes. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray it on the stain. “Then blot it up.” Again, you may need to do this multiple times for larger stains.

Heat Wax Burning candles in the house can result in wax dripping onto the carpet, where it quickly dries and gets embedded. Recommend heating it back up to remove it. Place a white cloth over your iron, then put the iron on top of the wax to warm it up. Finally, scrape off the wax with a butter knife. When you are done doing that, lay a paper towel over the surface area and iron on the paper. The wax is melting and binds to the paper, and the wax will be gone after a few more applications. Important note: Don’t use the iron this way for more than 30 seconds or you risk burning the carpet. And be sure to use a white cloth and white towels since colored ones can transfer the color onto the carpet when heated up, especially if you have a light-colored carpet.

Hydrogen Peroxide to the Rescue Few carpet stains are as obvious as blood. But suffering a paper cut on your finger and getting a few drops on the carpet doesn’t mean your shag is ruined. Hydrogen peroxide will get out blood all day long. First, loosen up dried blood with water mixed with a mild detergent. Then scrape off as much blood from the fibers as you can. To get the remainder, apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. The solution will immediately foam when it contacts the blood, so don’t be surprised. Then dab the hydrogen peroxide with towels to dry the carpet.

Clean Pet Accidents Organically Even well-trained pets can have an accident on the carpet. Prefer organic cleaners, which can costs about $10 for a spray bottle, rather than using chemicals. Spray the cleaner at the strain. Some scrubbing will be necessary. Then wipe up the cleaner with a cloth or towels. Eco-Spot and similar cleaners can also be used to remove other types of stains, including coffee and sauces.

Candy Crushed If you have kids in the house, it’s only a matter of time before candy ends up in the carpet. Try to scrape it with a spotter brush or a butter knife. Then, using a sponge, apply water mixed with a mild soap. “It is important to get all of the sugar out of the area on the carpet,” he points out. “Failure to do so will result in that area attracting dirt and debris easily.” Once the candy is removed, dry the spot by blotting it with a cloth or towels.

Clean your soft furnishings from dust mites!

Dust mites are one of those entities in our homes that you can only see under a microscope. They tend to form in places where your body rests, including blankets, pillows, furniture, carpeting, and even your mattresses. There can be millions of dust mites in any area without you seeing them. Many people assume that they have allergies when they wake up with sinus pressure, when they are sneezing, or when their eyes are red and itching but in fact, they are probably sharing their mattress with lots of dust mites. The development of breathing problems such as asthma and bronchitis can also be linked to dust mites.

How to remove dent from the wood

Very interesting and easy!
Additionally, you will require a rag or t-shirt and water. Be careful though, you mustn’t iron the piece of wood directly; that’s where the rag and water come in handy. At the end, if the result isn’t as smooth as you like it, take some sandpaper and apply to the afflicted area. Take a look over the tutorial and make your dented piece of wood almost good as new!

You’ll need the following:
  An iron
  Paper towel.
  Water

How to clean dirty wooden floor?

It can get very frustrating to clean the wooden floor up to perfect shine especially after home renovation or other works...  Easy and affordable solution! - scrub with Apple Cider Vinegar and water. Mix the two in any ratio you want. If the floor is very dirty, I'd make the solution very strong and use more Apple Cider Vinegar than water. Mop and scrub with this mixture. You might want to also wipe with rags, you don't have too if you don't want. The vinegar is actually good for wood...but if the floors are that dirty, you'll want to wipe to remove as much dirt as possible.

Apple Cider Vinegar contains tannins, which condition the wood while it cleans. It cuts grime and makes hardwood floors absolutely glow.

Once in a while I also add a couple teaspoons of Lemon Oil to the mixture...but you could use just about any Essential Oil, or even baby oil. If you do add oil, stir the mixture often to keep the oil mixed.

Helpful Uses for Vinegar in Your Pet Household

The ASPCA says vinegar is an environmentally friendly odor destroyer. If you have dogs, cats, fish or birds, you’ll find these tips very helpful.

  • Want a clean birdbath? Scrub it with undiluted white distilled vinegar followed by a good rinse.
  • Does your cat scratch your favorite chair? Simply spray white distilled vinegar on the chair. Just make sure you test a hidden area first for discolouration.
  • Flies bothering your horse? Spray a mixture of water and white distilled vinegar around the horse area.
  • Did your puppy have an accident? Pair vinegar with baking soda. It goes a great job of getting rid of the stain and the odor.
  • Worried about your cat eating toxic plants? Just spray the leaves with a mixture of white distilled vinegar and water.
  • Want to get rid of deposits and water lines in your aquarium? Simply wipe it down with white distilled vinegar followed by a rinse. If you have stubborn deposits, you may need to soak overnight.
  • Did your dog get sprayed by a skunk? Wipe him with a half and half solution of white distilled vinegar and water, followed by a bath. Another alternative that works is the mixture of 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap.
  • Got cat litter odor?  Pour 1/2 inch of white distilled vinegar in the empty litter box and swish it around. Let it stand for 15 minutes. If the smell is too strong for your kitty, try mixing the vinegar with some seltzer water.

    Paintwork tips for small spaces

Here at Room Envy we talk about all those qualities that make a home desirable: Lots of space – you can’t get enough of it ; Natural light – you can’t get enough of it; Elegant furnishings – you can’t get enough… anyway I think you get the drift. One aspect that’s very underrated is the paintwork. Who hasn’t agonised over finding the right colour and then when you finally think you have it, wincing at the thought of buying enough to cover those walls (I mean, these days good paint isn’t cheap is it?). Which is why I love these 10 tips from Pride and Joy.
    1. White is not always right! Most people will say white when you ask them to select the best colour for a small room. But you can make a room appear larger by painting the walls a light shade; or if you want the space to feel cosy and warm, go for rich tones. Avoid dark colours.
    2. What’s the room used for? If it’s a breakfast room or part of the kitchen where you drink coffee or juice first thing in the morning, choose a sunny hue. If it’s a bedroom where you want to unwind, however, choose soft tones which are easy on the eye.
    3. Go light! Light colours are great for opening up a small space; they make a room appear larger than it is. Don’t go for white; light green will make your small space seem as open as the great outdoors.
    4. Glossy glamour! Using a type of gloss finish will open up a small space. Use semi-gloss in the kitchen or bathroom but stick with the gentler eggshell and satin finishes for the lounge or bedroom.
    5. Marvellous monochrome. Use colours that are close in tone so that the eye moves smoothly without any interruption. This tricks the mind into believing a room is larger! Use colours from the same parts of the colour palette.
    6. Receding walls. Try using a slightly darker shade on the wall opposite the door; this will make the wall appear to recede and so make the room seem more spacious.
    7. Avoid deep colours. Red, dark blue and deep purple will make the room seem smaller. They are, however, the cosiest colours so it depends what you want!
    8. Sample stripes. Painting vertical stripes on the walls of a small room will make the ceiling appear higher. You’ll need to do some planning if you want neat lines!
    9. White woodwork. White woodwork not only looks clean but will refract the light back into the room given an open, spacious feeling.
    10. Splurge! Buy quality paint. Decorating small spaces obviously costs less than large spaces. Pick a quality brand and you can choose from a wide array of colours and enjoy better coverage and a longer life for your walls!
Paint advice, you can’t get enough of it!

    Keep spiders away from home

Let’s be completely honest. Nobody really likes spiders. Even if they are completely harmless little things, nobody really wants spiders hanging around inside their house. Few tips below how to keep them away..
    1. Peppermint:  spiders hate peppermint? Fill a spray bottle with peppermint essential oil and water, and then spray it around your home.
    2. Clean the house. Keeping your home neat and tidy, free of dust or webs is the best way to keep spiders from moving in. Regular vacuuming, dusting, and de-cluttering will keep any insects from making themselves at home!
    3. Vinegar: White vinegar has about five trillion uses around the house, and repelling spiders is one of them! Repelling spiders with vinegar is much like repelling them with peppermint oil, in that you fill a spray bottle with vinegar and water, and spray all the cracks and crevices around your home.
    4. Cats: Cats are a great spider deterrent! Four legged furry friends can be great hunters and will definitely not let a spider crawl across the floor without going on the prowl and taking care of business!

Looking for best eco cleaning product? - use lemons! Beside they leave a fresh smell, it’s the best natural replacement for industrial cleaners and disinfectants. With high content of citric acid, low pH and antibacterial proprieties, lemons don’t damage fabric or wood like your megastore products do. Always use with warm soapy water and a clean cloth.
    1. Clean antique real-brass objects. Test on a small area before using on the whole surface. But be careful with brass plated things, as the juice will harm the material.
    2. Scrub away the dirt off copper pots or dishes.
    3. Shine your car’s chrome decorations. Be sure to use salt with the lemon cleaner.

    Wash and whiten used pillows

Before you start washing and whitening your pillows:

    • Check the care label to confirm that your pillow (down or synthetic) can be machine washed – most can be.
    • Remove the pillow case and any pillow protector
When we are sleeping our body continues to sweat to keep the body at a comfortable temperature. One of the most common reasons why pillows can turn yellow is sweat. As the sweat dries, it can leave a yellow stain on the pillow.
There is nothing to embarrassed about and before dumping the pillow and buy the new ones, try washing it and whitening. You will need:

    • HOT HOT HOT water
    • 1 cup of laundry detergent
    • 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
    • 1 cup bleach
    • 1/2 cup borax
    • Put your machine on the 2nd rinse cycle or just run it through twice manually.

After washing it, for drying you will need " dryer balls' to put together into dryer:

Cleaning the garbage disposal and getting rid off smell

How to clean a garbage disposal? You will need a muffin or brownie pan. If you don’t have either of those, just use an ice cube tray. Slice up some lemons and limes and place a few in each of the cups; some distilled white vinegar. Fill each cup up almost to the top. Are you having fun yet? I sure am. These tablets are so easy to make, and I love the smell of lemons and limes. You could even use orange peels if you’d prefer. Take your tin and carefully place it into the freezer. Leave it in the freezer for at least 24 hours to ensure the vinegar freezes completely.Disclaimer. As good as these look, don’t try licking them. When you take them out of the tins you’ll be able to smell the vinegar. From afar, however, they look good enough to pop into your drink. My hubby actually licked his finger after touching one the day I made them and regretted it immediately.
They definitely are beautiful, but they’re not for consumption, so take care to store them in a bag in the freezer labeled DO NOT EAT.
When you go to use one, you’ll need one more ingredient – baking soda. Start running some really hot water into the sink for about a minute. Turn the water off and pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into the disposal, followed by one of the tablets. You’ll hear a little fizzing when you drop it in. Turn the water back on as a trickle and turn on the disposal. Push the rest of the tablet down into the disposal. Please watch your fingers! You should see some bubbling up from the disposal and you’ll be able to smell the vinegar and citrus. The ice actually helps sharpen your disposal blades. Using a tablet once a day should keep your disposal smelling fresh and clean.

    renovating, building new kitchen..

Currently again, I am working on few kitchen projects and many questions come while working with clients and spaces… It doesn’t matter if you are moving into an existing kitchen, remodelling the one you have or building a new one, understanding a few key measurements and organizational guidelines can help your culinary life run more smoothly.

Kitchens provide storage for your food and cookware, provide a place where you can cook and bake. When it’s thoughtfully arranged, these functions operate logically, making work in your kitchen a better experience. Here’s few tips for an ideal setup.
    Ideally:
1.refrigeration and dry-goods storage should be located nearest to the kitchen’s entry point.
2.the cooking area should be located toward the dining spaces, and the sink is best positioned between those two functions. This creates what’s called work triangle.
The best work triangle is less than 21 linear feet (6.4 meters). Work triangles that exceed 26 feet (7.9 meters) make moving from one function to another inefficient in most cases.

Preparation. Ideally, prep and cleaning space is best located around the sink. Within these areas will be everyday glasses and dishes, along with trash receptacles and the dishwasher. Allow 18 to 36 inches (45 to 92 cm) of countertop space on one or both sides of your sink.
Preparation areas are best kept clear of other items, since you will always be taking out bowls, plates and utensils there. Allow at least 36 inches (92 centimetres) of uncluttered countertop space for preparation in a small kitchen. Larger kitchens will have much more. This is one reason that islands are so popular. They provide broad and well-lit surfaces on which to perform the majority of kitchen tasks.

Cooking. The cooking centres should be arranged around the range, cooktop and wall ovens. Place pots, frying pans and baking sheets in the vicinity around your burners and ovens. It is a good idea to place small appliances such as toasters and coffeemakers in this area also, as it will leave your preparation areas unobstructed.

Allow 21 to 36 inches (53 to 92 centimetres) of countertop on either side of your cooktop. If possible, place wall ovens with a free countertop immediately next to them so that you can set down hot food immediately. Place seasonings, breadboards and potholders in nearby drawers and cupboards.

    Recommended Dimensions of Kitchen Elements
The dimensions of all the pieces in your kitchen are important to get right to make the best use of your space. A common refrigerator width is slightly less than 36 inches (92 centimetres). The problem is often the depth. In recent years some manufacturers have designed them to be much deeper than a 24-inch (61-centimeter) base cabinet. You can still buy shallower freestanding refrigerators, but you have to pay close attention to the dimensions listed in its specifications to be certain. The other option is built-in configurations, but they are significantly more expensive.

Look for a depth of 30 inches (76 centimetres) or less, excluding handles, unless you can design your kitchen space to accept a deeper unit. Another thing to consider is the swing of the refrigerator door. Always examine the swing direction to see if it will meet an obstruction.

Here you can see how the height of the cabinets plays an important part in the configuration. Upper cabinets are normally positioned at 18 inches (46 cm) above the countertop and are 30 to 42 inches (76 to 107 cm) in height. Consider that your average maximum reach over and into an upper cabinet is 70 to 80 inches (178 to 203 cm) above the floor. Cabinets set at above 7 feet will likely need to be accessed with a step ladder. Cabinets above 8 feet are not practical for the majority of people; however, they may serve as storage for seasonal or decorative items, to be reached with step stools and ladders.

The standard dimensions for base cabinets are 24 inches (61 centimetres) deep and 36 inches (92 cm) high. In general people are getting taller, so some homeowners are bumping up the counter height to 38 inches (97 cm).

Another important dimension to consider is the distance between cabinets. Entry points can be as little as 36 inches (92 cm) when there is a cabinet on only one side. Stay at least 42 inches (107 cm) from the face of a cabinet to the one on the other side; 48 inches (122 cm) is even better, but going beyond 60 inches (152 cm) is too wide in most cases. However, if it is a U-shaped kitchen, you could get away with up to 96 inches (244 cm).

And the most important thing – after the selections are made, the contract is signed, and you’re ready to start your construction project.

Not so fast! Before work begins, make sure you and your contractor and designer are on the same page about how things will go. This often takes the form of a pre-construction meeting, which may be most useful when held at your home and at least one week ahead of construction — particularly if you have furniture or other belongings to move.
